Marlish Water

Marlish Water

Meet the family farm that
started a green revolution
Nestled in the hills of Northumberland, Marlish Farm made its living
from traditional farming. Tapping into a natural spring on site gave
Elizabeth and her cousin Joe the bright idea of bottling the high-quality
water to sell and changed the course of their rural farm forever.

The drinks industry is increasingly
conscious of its part in the agenda
to reduce plastic waste and it’s
great to see organisations leading
the way. The first brand to can water
here in the UK, Marlish is committed
to making their products and
processes as sustainable as possible.
Joe and Elizabeth have created a
collection of spring waters, flavoured
waters, tonics and mixers that all
use water from an underground
aquifer, naturally replenished by rain
water slowly filtering through the
Northumbrian rock strata, to acquire
its pure quality and fine taste.
The farm has been in the family for
over 80 years and used to run an
education programme for children.
Now that the farm has diversified,
the new enterprise has created much
needed jobs in the region and this will
continue as the business expands.
Looking out for the local environment
and the animals that share their valley
is also important, as Elizabeth explains:
“We have planted over 5,000 trees to
create habitats for wildlife including
pheasant, partridge, hare and deer.”
They have also installed a solar tracker
system to support the manufacturing
facility, giving them a sustainable power
source for lights, process heating and
battery charging.
The efforts to be sustainable have
never been at the detriment to quality,
however, as Joe explains: “The purity
of the water really speaks for itself and
the reception to our products by top
venues across the UK has made us
realise that we have something really
special here.”
